Patching Instructions:

This patch is made for use with the Sega Saturn Patcher program by Knight0fDragon. You can download it here:

https://segaxtreme.net/resources/sega-saturn-patcher.73/

To apply it, simply load your disk image in the program, click the button that says "+ Game Patch (SSP)", select the patch file, then hit "Build Image" to create a new image with the English patch applied in your desired format. (If you're playing on emulator or burning to a CD-R, you probably want to use CUE/BIN.)

Please note that this patch is intended for the revision of the game labeled Waku Waku Puyo Puyo Dungeon (Japan) (4M) on Redump, with a serial number of T-6608G. I'm not sure what the difference is between this and the (3M) version, and that one seems to work fine with the patch, but I haven't tested it thoroughly and can't account for any irregularities if you use that one. To be safe, you should double-check that you have the correct dump.

FAQ:

Q: Do I need to play all three routes to beat the game? Is there a bonus for 100% completion?

A: Yes, you need to beat the fake final boss and roll credits with all three characters to unlock the true final dungeon. You don't get anything for beating the final dungeon three times, though.

Q: This game's really hard, what gives!?

A: Even though most players' first instinct will be to start with Arle's story as she's the main character of the franchise and the game never indicates that you should do otherwise, Schezo's gameplay is more tailored to beginners. Arle's frail defense makes her route stupidly punishing to start out on as she dies extremely easily. Schezo is sturdier, starts out with stronger spells, and has both magical and physical options. If you're having a hard time, try doing his route first. This has the added perk of letting you collect grimoires/manuals to sell back for Arle and Rulue to buy later, which should hopefully make their routes a little more painless.

(You do miss out on dialogue of Schezo getting clowned on by the other characters if you go through his story first though.)

Q: How do I identify items?

A: Spend over 500G at Momomo's shop and he'll give you the ability.

Q: Is this a Madou Monogatari game?

A: Technically, no, it's a spinoff of the Puyo Puyo games. Maybe they didn't want people to confuse it with the Madou reboot on Saturn, maybe they thought the Puyo Puyo name would sell more copies, but whatever the reason may be, it's not part of the Madou series.

Q: Any plans to translate the Playstation version (Ketteiban)?

A: I'd like to, but there were some technical hurdles to getting it to display English text that I wasn't able to overcome. If you're an experienced ROMhacker and are interested, get in touch.

Q: What's the difference between this and the Playstation port?

A: They're mostly the same, but the Playstation one is an enhanced edition with touched-up graphics, a bonus dungeon, more enemy/item variety, a new soundtrack, and various balance adjustments to make the experience a little smoother. It's more polished overall, but they took a fan-favorite song out of the final dungeon and it purportedly has a nasty habit of randomly crashing on original hardware, so the Saturn version does have that going for it.

Secrets:

There's a hidden area on the map that unlocks after beating Water Paradise. It's accessible by clicking the floating island with the waterfall in the top right corner. You can get some dialogue between Serilly and the player characters here, and free grass for Minotaur if you're playing as Rulue.
